Invest Comics raves about Harbor Moon in their review

Don Smith of Invest Comics has posted his extremely positive review of Harbor Moon over at their site. He calls it 'the 30 Days of Night for the werewolf crowd.' A comparison we'll glad take.

"This magnum opus can be considered the 30 DAYS OF NIGHT for the werewolf crowd. The story is heavy, the art is trippy, dreamy and heavier, but creator Ryan Colucci has much to be proud of with this book...

While this story could have easily gone the way of being a retread of THE HOWLING movies, it did not. Granted the cliches of boy seeking father, town with a secret and, heck, the werewolf genre have been played up in the last several years, it is still a great story.

As for the art by Pawel Sambor... Many pages are beautiful masterpieces, others are kinetic mixes of chaos, color and dark... The end of the book with the werewolves are beautiful."

Ain't It Cool News Reviews Harbor Moon

I have to admit, this is one of the reviews I was looking forward to the most. I think I speak for both Dikran and I in saying that as not only comic geeks, but film geeks, AICN is the one site we started going to FIRST in terms of scoops, film news, reviews, or anything geek related. They are definitely the pioneer and I was definitely sweating this one almost as much as I was Fangoria.

And I'm happy to say that Mark S. Miller, aka Ambush Bug, has nothing but awesome things to say about the book. In fact, he was cool enough to actually stop by at NY Comic-con today and wish me luck and say how much he liked it. It was definitely a great feeling... And here is some of what he had to say:

"I've got to give this book props for not telling your typical run of the mill werewolf story. The framework here is part noir and part Western as a stranger walks into town in search of the man who hurt his paw...(get it? werewolf story? shot paw...ohhh, nelly, I need a drink...). This is a nice genre mixing story where familiar aspects of horror, Western, and noir are dusted off and made new again by mashing them all together. This 100 + page is well paced and I was surprised how fast I whisked through it. Artist Pawel Sambor does a pretty fine job with mixing computer enhancements with his sketches though sometimes Sambor's characters look similar to each other. He makes up for it in spades when he draws the werewolves in all of their hairy and toothy glory. All and all, this is a refreshing take on the lycanthrope genre."

Ryan Sits Down with Casey Ryan's Cutting Room Floor

I took a quick (sort of) break from the NY Comic-con to do a live interview with Casey Ryan for his Podcast 'The Cutting Room Floor'.

It was a lot of fun and I was too exhausted and amped up from the con to be nervous. I hope it went well, I tend to speak fast - but not as fast as my brain works - so sometimes I veer off topic. Keep all of you on your toes. So, thanks a lot to Casey for speaking with me, I really appreciate it.

You can listen to the interview here.

Fangoria Gives Harbor Moon 3 out of 4 Skulls!

We're pretty pumped to announce that legendary American horror magazine Fangoria has given Harbor Moon 3 out of 4 skulls. An institution for horror fans everywhere for a long time, Clay Mcleod Chapman proclaims, "HARBOR MOON (written by Ryan Colucci and Dikran Ornekian) heralds a new crop of indie-comics craftsmen who deserve the plaudits likely heading their way."

"Inking with a murkiness reminiscent of Dave McKean’s graphic novel game-changer ARKHAM ASYLUM: A SERIOUS HOUSE ON SERIOUS EARTH, artist Pawel Sambor (with Nikodem Cabala receiving a supporting artist credit) has dragged his panels deep into the shadows, letting the darkness do most of his dirty work. There’s a fun interplay between what’s actually on the page and what the reader’s imagination projects upon them, filling in those unfathomably black panels with rendings of flesh as townsfolk transform into werewolves."

"...when the claws finally come out and the flesh gets shredded, a beacon of bleeding light mercifully pours forth from this book. Colors take on a palpable presence here, and the pages glisten with viscera, pulpy enough to drench every panel. Blood splatters with such vivid intensity, one might feel the impulse to take a tissue and sop up the excess dribble. You’ll need a mop to flip the page."

"Fans of Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith’s 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, take note: HARBOR MOON shares an aesthetic kinship with its comic cousins in Barrow, Alaska. These graphic novels possess such a similar gloom-hued visual sensibility, one can easily imagine a comic-book mashup of the two. That was the fantasy that slipped through this reviewer’s brain while flipping through HARBOR MOON, at least. Reading them back to back makes for a rather satisfying pairing. Think of them together as a TWILIGHT SAGA for gorehounds."

A Hairy Interview with Ryan at Pulp Metal Magazine

Ryan recently sat down with Jason Michel from Pulp Metal Magazine to talk about the book, and Jason also posted his review over at their site.

"The first thing you notice about Harbor Moon, whilst flicking through it, are the colours. Very vivid, in an Dave McKean/Arkham Asylum kind of way. The images just jump out at you. Literally. Especially the beasties, who are definitely the stars of the whole episode. The artist Pawel Sambor has used a variety of inventive styles to convey the story; from the raw, to the highly detailed, to the dizzingly dynamic. Sometimes it all feels too much & your head is left spinning as you try figure out what just happened.

Now to the story.

What is it about small towns? Harbor Moon takes place in one such place. A town with a beastly secret. It starts with a BANG, GROWLS its way through the first part, HOWLS towards the second half & finishes with a BOOM & it takes you along for the ride. The diverse characters are tough & offbeat & the dialogue is as sharp & sparse as in the tradition of a Spaghetti Western & therein lies the story’s originality. It is an enjoyable ride & a phenomenal effort that I, for one, hope gets the recognition it deserves." - Jason Michel, Pulp Metal Magazine
